Kirby is a 14-year-old Congo African Grey

Kirby is a 14-year-old CAG that was an impulse buy when he was 2 years old.  A few months after I bought him, I got a good bite and since then have been afraid of his beak.  I can handle him now once he's out of or off his cage, but Bill has to get him into the cage at night for me.  The cage is 6' with a domed top and I'm under 5', so you can imagine who is "in charge" here.  I use this tale to emphasize one should not buy a bird just because it talks, but do one's research into the entire species first.  Because Kirby talked already, I have 70-80 more years of being afraid of his beak; I won't put him in the rescue as it's not his fault I didn't do my homework first.

That being said, Kirby is a great entertainer when we're out of sight. The entire time Bill and I were on our honeymoon, Kirby was talking up a storm in Bill's voice while a friend repaired and painted the stairway leading to the bird room.  He likes to stand on the door top of the cage nearest the birdroom door and holler at me when I go into the bathroom across the hall in the mornings.

I no longer take him to the bird shows as he's not happy going and another club member brings his two CAGs that love the crowds and attention.
